Fire brigade rescues dog from 8-metre-deep well in Beersel

The Flemish Brabant West Fire Service has rescused a dog that fell into an 8-metre-deep well in the village of Alsemberg near Beersel. The disused well is located under bushes and is completely overgrown. The dog’s owners raised the alarm straight away and the fire service deployed a specialised team to free the unfortunate animal.

An evening walk lasted a little longer than expected for a dog and its owners on Thursday. While exploring under a bush the dog fell into a disused well. Although, the animal’s owners quickly found their pet they were unable to get it out of the well. They called the fire service.

Wouter Jeanfils of the Flemish Brabant West Fire Service told VRT News that “Our team first had to remove all the brambles and other undergrowth. They then immediately requested assistance from our regional GRIMP team that is specialised in this kind of rescue operation. After an hour, the animal was freed”.

The dog is doing well and was reunited with its owners straight away. “He had obviously landed safely on his feet and was able to just continue his walk”, Mr Jeanfils said.

To prevent a recurrence of Thursday evening’s incident or an even worse incident occurring the local council will fill in well in today (Friday 15 November).
