My Husband Missed the Birth of Our First Child — After Discharge, I Returned to an Empty House and a Creepy Note in the Crib
When Elena was in the hospital, ready to welcome her first child with Michael, she found herself alone with only her mother by her side. Michael, who had promised to be there, was nowhere to be found. Discharged a couple of days later, Elena returned home, hopeful that Michael would be there waiting with an explanation. Instead, she found a note from him that left her devastated.
Elena had always believed that the happiest day of her life was her wedding day, but when she found out she was pregnant, she thought the birth of their child would surpass that joy. Little did she know that it would mark the beginning of a nightmare. Michael had promised to be there, holding her hand as they brought their baby into the world. They had planned every detail together, from the delivery room playlist to the tiny hat their baby would wear.
But when the moment arrived, Michael was absent. The nurses tried to reassure Elena, suggesting that he was simply delayed, but as time passed, her worry grew. She had been calling him for hours, leaving desperate voicemails, but there was no response. As her contractions intensified, so did her fear. Was she really about to give birth alone? What could have kept Michael away?
When their daughter was born, Elena’s joy was tinged with sadness. The spot where Michael should have been was empty. Her mother was there, holding her hand, but the worry in her eyes was evident. If her mother knew anything, she didn’t say a word.
After two days in the hospital, Elena was finally discharged. Her mother helped carry Emily to the car, and they drove home in silence. Elena tried to calm herself, reasoning that there must be a logical explanation for Michael’s absence. Maybe something happened at work, or perhaps he had an accident and was at another hospital. As they neared home, her thoughts grew increasingly wild.
But nothing could have prepared her for what she found when they arrived. The house was eerily quiet. Elena opened the door, half-expecting Michael to be inside with an excuse she could forgive. But the house was empty, and there was no sign of him.
Ignoring her mother’s caution to be quiet, Elena rushed upstairs to the nursery, hoping Michael might be there. They had spent weeks perfecting the room, ensuring it was just right for their daughter. But when she opened the door, she was stunned. The room was almost empty. The crib was there, but all the decorations, stuffed animals, and baby outfits were gone. All that remained was a single piece of paper inside the crib.
The note read, “I love you and our baby, Elena. But I have to leave forever. Ask your mom why she did this. I’ve taken some of Emily’s things to remember you both.”
Elena was in shock, unable to comprehend what Michael meant. What had her mother done? Rushing downstairs, she confronted her mother, demanding answers. Her mother, holding Emily in her arms, looked at her with heavy eyes, a flicker of guilt visible.
“I didn’t want you to find out this way,” her mother said quietly.
“What are you talking about?” Elena nearly screamed, demanding to know what had happened.
Her mother took a deep breath, preparing herself for what she was about to reveal. “I found out something about Michael, and it was too big to keep to myself. He needed to know that I knew.”
“Knew what?!” Elena asked, her exhaustion overwhelming her.
“He’s been having an affair,” her mother confessed. “With someone from his office. He admitted it when I confronted him.”
Elena felt like she had been hit with a physical blow. She couldn’t believe it. Michael had been so excited about their baby, about growing their little family. How could this be true?
“I wish it wasn’t true, darling,” her mother said softly. “But he admitted it. He’s been seeing his boss, a woman much wealthier than we could have ever dreamed. She’s been offering him things he couldn’t refuse.”
The words crushed Elena. The promotion, the new car—it all made sense now. Michael hadn’t earned those through hard work; they were part of his affair.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” Elena asked, tears streaming down her face. “Why didn’t you give me the chance to talk to him, to fix it?”
Her mother tried to comfort her, explaining that she had given Michael a chance. She had told him to either confess everything to Elena or leave for good. And he had chosen to leave.
Elena was devastated. She wanted to believe that there was more to the story, that her mother hadn’t forced Michael away. But deep down, she knew that her mother had never fully accepted Michael. They had tolerated each other, but nothing more. What if her mother had wanted him gone?
Elena voiced these thoughts out loud, leading her mother to tearfully deny any ill intent. She insisted that she had only wanted to protect her daughter. But Elena couldn’t help but feel betrayed. Everything she had known and believed in had been ripped away in an instant. Michael was gone, likely with his mistress, her mother had betrayed her trust, and she was left alone with a newborn and a broken heart.
In the days that followed, Elena tried to contact Michael, but her calls went unanswered. When he finally did pick up, it was by accident. He confirmed everything her mother had said. He wasn’t coming back. He had chosen his new life with his boss, Gretchen, over the family they had planned.
Michael disappeared from Elena’s life as quickly as he had entered it. But at least their daughter, Emily, would never have to know him or experience the pain of his betrayal. Elena was left to rebuild her life as a single mother, grappling with the loss of her husband and the betrayal of her mother.
