Three years ago, red wolf Deven was given the opportunity every captive red wolf dreams of – the chance to be wild. Born at the WCC in 2018, Deven had only ever known a life behind a fence and although it was a fulfilling one with his parents and siblings, it would be foolish of us to assume that he didn’t long for a life without boundaries.
Sadly, just a few days after he was released to the wilds of North Carolina, Deven was struck and killed by a car. His death was tragic, as are the deaths of the countless red wolves who have been killed by vehicles on the same stretch of Highway 64.
Years later, we have a chance to turn Deven’s death into a lasting legacy. Center for Biological Diversity, Wildlands Network, and other groups are raising funds to build overpasses, underpasses, and fences along Highway 64.
